Get your name out there
Posted Monday, August 25 2008 by The JobsBloggers
Whether you’re looking for a job, thinking about your next career move or content with where you’re at, you should always be thinking about how to demonstrate your expertise and position yourself in the industry. What do I mean by this? Think about technical conferences, online blogs, RSS feeds you subscribe to. When you want to stay informed and learn more in your specific industry, you turn to these sources. More than likely there are specific names that you would immediately associate with if you heard them... how about Danny Sullivan or Joel Spolsky or Robert Scoble?
Why am I mentioning this? These are great ways to get your name out there and become an expert in a specific field. At Microsoft, we hire people who apply to our jobs, but we also have recruiters who look for and contact people who haven’t applied yet. After all, there might be a perfect job out there for the perfect person who just doesn’t know it yet.
Our recruiters will search the internet for blogs, forums, conferences, etc. It’s not about a resume but rather looking for the people who specialize in the field. I would recommend that if you want to leverage your expertise to supplement your “career brand” online, you should include your email address when you post so potential employers have a way of contacting you.
Being visible also is a great way for hiring managers to get to know you as well. They attend the conferences and read forums too and this is a great chance to network with them. So take a few minutes each day and write a blog post (be sure to reference other post or articles) or answer a question on a forum. Whatever you do, be sure it’s intellectual and thought-provoking so other readers will then sign up to your RSS feeds.

Just one tip. Don't sing. I think the nice people at jobsblog are afraid of me now.
IT WAS JUST ONE SONG!
Offkey as always
Sean
The Friday Funny Guy
Permanent thorn in the side to the auditory peace of Microsoft Recruiters.... :P
This is an other form of networking which in reality is the best way to get a job. I'm always interested to see how everything moving online has put a spin on traditional ways of doing things. Instead of networking through friends and clubs it is know blogs, facebook, rss feeds, etc.
Sean, we're not afraid of you. We loved the song.. offkey and all. :) Just kidding!
Uh oh....
I have more people at Microsoft encouraging me.
Now I'M afraid... :}
Now if only... ONLY....I could get Mr. Ballmer to hear his song....
Sean
Inspired and Energized by people at Microsoft
now if only I could get hired.... :)
And if anybody reading this out of Microsoft is wondering, I'm just a person who met a few people at Microsoft. Those people, their attitude about everything set me off down a pathway I can't look back on.
Back singing aside, their inspirational words "Hey you're just like us!" patting me on the back inspired me to do "SOMETHING". I'm inspired at this point to keep trying "SOMETHINGS" seeing my limits.
Yes it comes out as a "Funny Guy" in many respects, but I encourage ALL of you, no matter what your personal thoughts on your capabilities are. Try something. Try something different.
You don't necessarily have to "push yourself" but I've found trying something a little different each and every time produces and inspires yourself.
I may never be a millionaire, I may never rule the world. (Who wants that?)
But I will always be me.
And thanks to a tiny little nudge from Microsoft
I am Sean,
An Energized Tech
A Friday Funny Guy
and a person who is trying to see the positive in the world each and every day.
Thanks Microsoft... :)
Can you tell your readers how one might actually get in front of some of your recruiters?
Yes, please give the readers some tips on actually getting to talk with a recruiter, especially if you are an experienced professional.
